Hagan Joined By Black Farmers For Introduction of Bill Funding Pigford Settlement

Hagan announced a bill with Sen. Lincoln, the Chairman of the Senate Agriculture Committee. They joined John Boyd, President of the National Black Farmers Association, Congressional Black Caucus Chair Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), and Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX) who also spoke at the press conference. The bill would ensure that African American farmers who were unfairly discriminated against by the U.S. Department of Agriculture when applying for loans, credit and other forms of financial help, will receive the settlement to which they are entitled. Congress has thus far failed to appropriate the funding.

If any discrimination exists in our nation a settlement should be done. The figure you use of 80,000 farmers far exceeds the some 27,000 black farm owners at the Pigford case.

You are correct that if discrimination exists it should be routed out. However, This case has been settled. These parties had a legitimate time line to ask for payment, and they didn't do it. That combined with the possible errors leaves this program to be nothing more than another entitlement program

Paying people not to work while people who are working are paying too much in taxes. Seems immoral to me.
