I figure this was How I Met Your Mother’s tribute to NPH’s earlier acting job. This clip is almost identical -down to the very music- to the endings of the Doogie Howser episodes

There's another reference in to NPH's earlier career in the episode where Barney fakes a family for his mother, and has a complaint about child actors nowadays, vs in the 80s.
