This is a kind of rap created from riffs and rhymes on ideas from Samantha Weinberg's fascinating popular book about the discovery of the Coelacanth, A Fish Caught in Time. It began as a family project in an Irish pub by Judith Harway and her 10-year old son Keith Armstrong while on vacation. Dan Armstrong took the resulting lyric and wrote this song during a tour with the Chicago Symphony. It is presented here in a home-made version with Armstrong on all virtual, real and vocal instruments. We hope the song reflects our sense of wonder at the evolution of life on earth. One other thing: unlike the fish, the song has yet to be seen "live", although it was once rehearsed by the Jason Seed Elixir Ensemble.

  • I would love to see one of those in an aquarium. That would be an awesome exhibit, totally worth seeing.

  • As the song says, "the museum's where you'll see 'em": coelacanths shouldn't be fished and no one should try to capture them because any attempt to bring these fish up from the depths where they live will kill them. But you're right: they're very cool.
