Custer had to know he was screwed as soon as he retreated up the ravine. The closure rate of an enemy force is something someone as experienced as Custer can just feel.
Consider the speed of the Indian ponies with riders, how many there were, how many were firing at them and their rate of fire. There is no way the Indian force was not going to be among them in close combat, overwhelming and annihilating them.
All the above is something Custer realized, intuitively.

@HerrCollier No, he's being honest. But he is wrong; without heavy armor the cavaliers would in any case be at a major disadvantage. However, Custer had thrice as many men under his command than is stated.
