About low back pain:

Ahhh, dreaded lower back pain! I feel like there are a whole lot of people I know who have dealt with lower back pain, whether or not they've done yoga. I've been there before...

Yoga can both cause and cure lower back pain. Injuries can happen when you either push yourself past your healthy edge, or if you compromise your form. For example, in any backbending pose you want the tailbone tucked under and your core engaged. Not doing this cause strain and pressure on your lower back leaving you with a pesky ache.

Also make sure when you're practicing that you're not swaying your back out, like in Chair Pose or Crescent Lunge. Tuck the tailbone under and pull the navel in for a healthy long spine.

Outside of Yoga, check your posture when your sitting, if you round your upper back and slouch your shoulders you're creating a lot of pressure on your lower back, and flattening the natural curve. You may want to invest in a chair with good lumbar support.

Doing yoga helps strengthen the postural muscles that keep your spine long, just remember the basic alignment of tucking the tailbone under, pull the navel in.

  • Wow, this really works! I have three herniated discs and various other problems like bone spurs and ligament damage and I never get relief. This sequence actually gave my back some time off.

    Thanks much,

    Adam
