The multiply method (color tut video 01) works best with brighter images or line-art and the color layer method (color tut video 02) works best for darker images as it will not effect white areas.
Having your line-art or b/w drawing and the color on separate layers you can adjust the colors by doing:

when working with color layer mode (color tut video 02), if the color does not look like what you have in mind then use image/adjustments/Hue/Saturation to tweak the color until you get the shade you need. You can lower the layer opacity to have less saturation too.

when working with multiply layers (color tut video 01) you can adjust the colors by using image/adjustments/Hue/Saturation

To get the best results you still can paint over on top of your image.
The downside of working with multiply layers is that you can not make good use of the color-picker unless the background is completely white.
