Am currently trying feeding chinese cabbage ("wong nga pak" in Cantonese) to my koi. This is reportedly a senior Hong Kong hobbyist's secret to fantastic whites. He was a major winner at the last HK Koi Show, so his results speak for themselves.

  • hooinc now that its been a year. how are the whites turning out?

  • @comchung I didn't actually feed the Chinese cabbage for a year, but I think if one was disciplined, it would likely help improve the whites.

  • Hi hoonic I have a question... Is it bad too put uv lights before the filter?

  • @jakoi945 Hi. I think there was a very recent thread on Koi Bito which discussed this. The UVs are more effective in the last chamber (pump chamber) as the water there is much cleaner and there is much less likelihood of dirt particles blocking the unicellular algae from the killing effects of the UV lights. Not sure if putting the UVs before the filter will be "bad", but perhaps less effective.

  • Amazing fish Does the cabbage benefit the fish at all. Or was it just a treat for the fish. Because I ve given watermelon and oranges to my fish before. just as a treat. I would imagine that cabbage wouldnt taste to good. lol

  • @jordan628trisha It's supposed to help further whiten koi shiroji. Over time I will know.

  • @hooinc thank you for the info.

  • @harirahardjo Thank you, Alvin. Growing a koi big depends on 3 factors - genetics, food and water quality, not necessarily in that order. If a koi doesn't have the genetics to grow big (even if the mother is a jumbo), then it isn't going to grow big. You're already feeding very good food, so food can't be a factor. You might want to try periodic "pumping" though, where you feed very aggressively for 3-4 weeks. Watch the water parameters though, ease off if quality suffers.Never tried Manda.

  • Hi Paul, i've been a fan of your uploads. Great knowledge you are sharing here, man. I noticed that most of your kois have massive body volume. Any tips for me ? My kois are around 40 - 60cm but they dont have such volume. Is it the food or is it the cooler water that makes them eat more, your pond is around 24-25 degree Celsius right ? I feed them with FD color and silk worm in the morning, but no satisfying result so far. Thinking about adding manda nishiki ... what do you think ?

  • well i know its ich for sure because of the little white dots and the fact that they always try scratching themselves against the gravel. I've already changed the water and added aquarium salt so I hope they get better... Also how often should you check the water? I never do because I never knew wer were supposed to.
