15 January 2008: Aviva's 180 degree test - Aviva was turned upside down by a crane lifting the keel, inside Aviva during the test was Dee Caffari and Joff Brown, project manager for Aviva Ocean Racing.

  • But does that work under sail?

  • Sails add drag and therefore slow the roll of the boat as it rights itself, but they do not prevent the boat from righting.

  • How many marinas could accommodate a 30 metre mast? Not only beneath the boat but when the boat rolls upright too- that's why they don't have it rigged up

  • The mast would snap with the pressure of water on fully drawn sails. The test isn't done with full mast and rigging for this reason, it is rather pointless. :)

  • Good Point ! The sails would be added resistance to righting.Perhaps they should be tested with sails up.
