Well, I'm a MAG gymnast / judge, but I believe it's due to a difference in routine composition and skills. For example, in the 1970s, the gymnasts often competed skills that involved swinging on one bar and "bouncing" their torso / hips off of the other bar; this, coupled with the lack of giant-derivative turns and skills, required the bars to be close.
Now most of the skills on uneven bars are giant-derivative (e.g., pirouettes, releases, el-grip) and require the bars to be further apart.

@llers72 Yes, this is from 1979. Some of the gymnasts are very easy to recognize. Thank you for posting this!

No zoom on old camera's??? are you 15 years old??? The guys in this video are very real, most of them are friends of mine, and yes it is real!!! You may have a hard time believing this, but gymnastics is older than you are..........

cant believe the level of ignorance that exists after reading some of the comments on here. Where's the sound and its a fake made me laugh-these people must have a collective IQ of about 2. Anyway great to see pure gymnastics, none of this extra springy floor nonsense. This must of been world Championships around 1978. Great footage of the Cubans-completely mad but ahead of their time. Thanks for posting
