Rhythm 10 [CMU CENTERPUNCH - pixie edit]

A cover of Marina Abramovic's "Rhythm 10"


Performance
I start the webcam. I take the tool and plunge it, as fast as I can, into the flesh between the outstretched fingers of my left hand. After each cut, I change to a different object. Once all the objects (all the rhythms) have been used, I replay the tape. I listen to the recording of the first performance. I concentrate. I repeat the first part of the performance. I pick up the objects in the same sequence, adhere to the same rhythm and cut myself in the same places. In this performance, the mistakes of the past and those of the present are synchronous. I replay the same video and listen to the dual rhythm of the tools. I am rewarded with delicious powdered candy.


Clearly, this is not a direct cover or representation of the original Rhythm 10. I'm not practiced at this game and lack the "state of consciousness" of a performance artist. Given the environment, it was difficult to concentrate or jab very quickly, although I wasn't aiming to inflict any real damage on my hand. I was surprised that the audience actually felt suspense, which I figure occurs when watching someone familiar toss around potentially dangerous objects.
Marina Abramovic is one of my favorite artists and I don't mean to disrespect her work. This was merely a demonstration and just for fun :)

I love the laughing. It really punctures the solemnity/pretentiousness of the original piece.

At the same time, it waters down the primal nature of the thing. of the original thing, that is, or what I originally got from it.
