@johnnyrckt Frankly, strafing armored targets is something that's just below a $150 million aircraft. The rugged and "cheap" planes, like the A-10, can do the diving into a face-full of .50 cal (or worse). The F-22 is meant to stay pretty.

@k2477456 In fact, the 30mm round is capable of effectively penetrating armor of 69mm at 500 meters and 38mm at 1000 meters. But this need for extra caliber isn't necessary on board fighter aircraft - which are not armored like tanks. Therefore, the extra heft of a much larger weapon system is not necessary. Although, the MIB's decision to skip the much lighter 27mm Mauser on board the Tornado just because it is foreign was a big mistake, IMO. Take care. Sources - NOT wikipedia

@k2477456 The Gau-8 in the A-10 weighs in at 620 lbs. Total weapon system weight is 4029 lbs with 1174 round normal load out. The M61A2 Vulcan on the current F-18 carries either 940 (A-D) or 500 (E-F) rounds depending on the model. Fire rate is selectable at 4000 or 6000 rounds per minute. The difference here is that one is a tank killer and the other is a substantial AA gun. The Gau-8 was designed to penetrate Soviet tank armor. There's a reason behind the logic.

@k2477456 20mm can't penetrate modern day heavy armor. We're talking 10! extra MM it is a massive difference between the two guns. If the rate of fire on the Gau8(A-10) was any higher the pilots would have a harder time keeping it on target from the recoil.

in fact this gun shoots at 6,000 rounds a minute to the A-10's gun which fires 4200 rpm, this gun is a 20mm vs the a-10s 30mm but this gun is only 200lbs compared to th a-10s 700l
