Thomas Pickens was born on December 28, 1944 in Weston, WV and grew up there. He was drafted into the Army in March of 1966 and was sent to Fort Rucker, Alabama for his basic training. During his time at Fort Rucker, he was selected to be part of an Amphibian Company at Fort Story, Virginia and was subsequently sent to Vietnam. His main duties was to operate a LARCV (Lighter Amphibian Resupply Cargo 5 ton) to transfer shipments of needed supplies into Vietnam as they arrived on ships. After leaving his military service in 1968, he soon graduated from Glenville State College in 1971 and spent his civilian career teaching in the Lewis County, WV school system. This interview gives a brief insight into Mr. Pickens' time in the military.
