Another way to change the colour is the make the entire area around the hair the colour that you want, then eresase the parts that you don´t want coloured. You just use a transparent layer. Se the movie "How to change skin color - Gimp Tutorial.." to understand what i mean.
I think both ways are good but with the other way, you can use a fuzzy brush to make the edges around the hair look more realistic.

Thanks so much for this tutorial! I used Photoshop for a while, but I haven't been able to use it since my laptop was stolen. I got a new comp and found out about Gimp. I was a bit rusty w/ my skills, so I'm having to re-learn everything. I watch the videos and learn how to do new things. So thanks...my hair is purple now.
