why does he open the cylinder cocks every once and a while?

@caserules1 dude its just a kid relax hes young he only knows so much leave him alone! heck he probably knows more then u!
He is twelve now. He and the other young boys depicted in this and other videos are all growing up fast and each of them are becoming quite competent operators. I view the hobby will be safe with these young boys coming up.

But at the time, I would rather have him error on the side of caution and open the cylinder cocks prematurely vs. waiting and hammering on the cylinder instead.

As those that own Case's know, they tend to prime (carry water from the boiler into the cylinder) under a load. My son, after witnessing this phenomenon a few times, has gotten where he prematurely opens the cylinder cocks when he hears a difference in engine sound. As he has had more throttle time, he has since learned to also look for the white puff's of steam/water when he denotes a change in the engine sound...more

97trainman,
Well, sort of like when we go to a bank to take out a loan, our son signed a contract with his mother and me accepting to do extra chores and whatnot to pay off what he owes us for the cost of the machine...it's a win win for both his mother and me. From time to time, when he starts to complain about whatever chore he is asked to complete, we simply remind him of what he is working for...the complaining usually stops...or at least goes to a low mutter. (wink)

Not sure who you are, caserules1, but please keep your negative comments to yourself. As for your 20BHP, spikes don't really count and I highly doubt you can sustain what you claim. I have had the privledge of witnessing several half scale 65hp Case engines on different brakes and they all deliver right around the same BHP, 12 BHP, plus or minus one or two.

The engine has tested out at 13 BHP (brake hp).
