Sterlite Copper has woven social responsibility into its business fabric right from its inception in 1996-97. The company believes that business objectives should include overall development of communities around its surrounding areas. The aim has always been to go beyond mere 'corporate social responsibility' to understand the real needs and genuine concerns of the people and provide the necessary stimulus to not only address these issues but ensure social involvement, acceptability and sustainability.
Sterlite Copper has been involved in several health initiatives. It rolled out 'Project Clean Hand' to bring about awareness of personal hygiene among school children. Sterlite has sponsored the setting up of a pediatric block in Government Hospital at Tuticorin. It has also launched 'Save a Child Heart Programme' by which children with heart ailments undergo free surgery and treatment. So far 98 children have been benefitted by this programme. Sterlite has also established six clinics in surrounding villages benefitting around 28,000 people. It also extends support to six PHCs (Primary Health Centres) in polio immunization drives. Sterlite also routinely conducts eye and general health camp at villages which has benefitted over 32,000 people till date. It has also participated in government run camps which have benefitted 15,000 people.
