Ten bucks says, especially among royalty, homosexual sex/relationships were quite popular since it couldn't cause pregnancies.
There have been quite a few kings/etc rumored to have maybe been gay/bisexual- Edward II of England,James I of England,William III of England,Louis XIII of France, Rudolf II,Frederick II of Prussia,Alexander the Great,Julius Caesar,William II Rufus,etc.
Homosexuality wasn't that controversial until Christianity/etc.
In some areas/times it was even downright common.

I find it quite amazing and very funny that most of the fans actually want Merlin and Arthur to be in a gay relationship !

The way their eyes get darker when they see the other?
If Merlin or Arthur were a girl, with the way they look and touch each other and have no concept of personal space, everyone would be shipping them, not just the fangirls.
