Auz was "volunteered" to be my demo to show how it's not always the dogs's fault for not liking their nails trimmed. When I pull his leg out to the side to be more comfortable for *me*, Auz starts pulling away and fighting. When I move, and hold his foot in a natural position, he settles right away (though he doesn't look overly thrilled, he's never liked that darned nail file!) I prefer teaching bigger dogs to lie down for trimming nails and feet, but the end of the video shows how you can do the same thing while the dog is standing. If needed, you can position yourself up against their side so they have something to "lean" on if they have trouble standing on 3 feet.
It's not necessary to grasp the foot as hard as you can in case they "pull away". Lightly picking up their foot ,and gentle, confident-but-sure handling will get you farther than trying to outmuscle a dog (especially if they weigh more than you do!)
Again, keeping the foot and leg in a natural position, being confident, kind and sure, is the key to making nail trimming easy for all :)
