Alphabet Soup

March 7, 2008 - Iowa Community Center preschool. I finished a terrific storytime with a large and happy group of 3- to 5-year-olds with the "group sing" I use frequently: Tom Chapin's "Alphabet Soup." I LOVE this song.

Actually, I love all of Tom Chapin's stuff, but this is one of the few that I can perform without knowing how to play guitar - plus, from seeing him in concert several times, I know the gestures we all do for the chorus. Anyway, I think the whole "alphabet" thing ties in with my whole "reading is cool" message.

I hope Mr. Chapin doesn't mind that I use his song so often - but I know one of his other songs encourages people who hear a good song to "pass it on," just like we storytellers do with good stories. "Alphabet Soup" can be found on Tom Chapin's CD "Moonboat" and his concert video "This Pretty Planet."

I made Alphabet Soup today and had this song stuck in my head while it was cooking. This Pretty Planet was a childhood favorite of mine, and I can't find any other videos of this song ANYWHERE. Thanks for putting this up. It made my night.
