my mac which is an imac with a 1.8 GHz intel core Duo Processor works great with 512 mb of ram. im not playing any games on it but i am able to use programs like App Fresh, safari and word while at the same time be using handbrake to rip a dvd. thats all the multi tasking i need. Also my machine boots in about 18 seconds.
That 512MB is not really 'ideal'. I doubt the other guy implied that its a minimum of 2GB needed to boot OSX. Its the minimum to really make the most of the OS. Infact if I was running OSX, I'd get 3+GB for sure. I'd do the same with Vista as well. Vista home basic says 800Mhz and 512MB. The higher versions say 1Ghz and 1GB RAM, but i'd bump it up to 2GB or more. Yes it can start on less but its not fun....and I'm sure OSX 10.5 wont be a joy at 512MB either :)
i run vista on 256 MB. Did it for fun. it ran just as fast as it always did. 49 seconds for startup,11 seconds for shutdown.
