that gave less holidays(though they do give national hols), make you do your own sales and have no shift swap system. In the REAL world few jobs would have given us chance to take long-weekends so liberally like we could at Nova. Sure, the big whigs were shite but as a way of making money by doing little work so you could stay in Japan and see the world, it wasn't all that bad. There were plenty of alternatives for people who really couldn't handle it. Until the end anyway when there was nothing
While I won't defend Nova (particularly the losers that strived to achieve the lofty heights of AT and then abused it) it wasn't that bad. It was fashionable among gaijin to slag it off, so people did. Managment was corrupt but day-to-day there were few problems. Most teachers were in Japan to travel - not teach - so the system worked well for them (turn up, grab the book and go) and the shift swaps meant I got 4 5-day breaks in 7 months, without using a day of holiday. Better than other eikaiwa
NOVA going under was the best thing that could have happened to us. Sure I feel bad for the people who didn't get paid, but NOVA screwed people for years.
I ended up being paid my final salary a few months later when I was back home in Australia.
I miss Nova. I don't care they paid crap all. It was my ticket to live in Japan!
