Had Lt. Dunbar not gone back to get his diary, history would have still played out. To those who had watched the movies, did you see the scouts that were used by the pony soldiers? The rule of "Divide & Conquer" was used by the soldiers (and not just them) but it has been used down through the ages.
So, in a manner of speaking, Lt. Dunbar WAS running out on his friends. Would it have made a difference if he stayed?
OTOH, he could've stayed for the principle.
