"Welcome to New Orleans" is a 58 minute documentary about the city of New Orleans during the first year after Katrina. This film depicts the violence and racism in the impoverished American South. This is a story about the bottom-side of United States--a society that has been left to fend for itself. But more importantly, this film is about hope, in the face of overwhelming adversity.
"Welcome to New Orleans" depicts the ravaged city through the eyes of Malik Rahim, a 58-year-old former member of the Black Panthers, who stayed during and after Hurricane Katrina, in order to help residents. He has become a local hero, as he has built up his grassroots organization, Common Ground Collective, over the past two years. Common Ground has served over 170,000 residents with the help of over 12,000 volunteers, who have traveled from all 50 states and 40 different countries.

It's easy to sit back in your comfy home and point the finger at the black community for not doing this or that but I can rest assure you, you would be singing a whole different tune if this were you or someone in your family...

When your humanity is stripped away from you during something like this, you cease to retain it for something as simple as common decency and repsect for other people's property. I am not justifying looting, but I am willing to bet that a good portion of the people who did it felt 'why should I lose my life over respect for laws from a governing body who doesn't care whether I live or die? Therefore, I am going to do whatever it takes to survive' Again, not saying it is right.

there was some white people left for dead to many types of people. Yes most of the white people left or took refuge in safe places close by. However like i said its always one sided white people shot people. Well they also did defend there homes against violent criminals trying to take advantage of everything they could while the cops were away. Trust me they have millions of them looking for handouts but it seemed like after katrina instead of helping everyone get on their feet again they just helped the ones who were stupid and stayed behind. Not just the idiots from the 9th ward got hit by katrina all of the gulf coast did then we got hit again by rita 2 weeks later.
