Such a perfect depiction of a nostalgic daydream--only Schumann could have matched Schubert's abilities in that regard.
Fischer-Dieskau had one hell of a voice in the day.

Auch große,ja größte Sänger hatten in ihrer Kindheit und Jugend sängerische Idole, deren Stimmen das Herz höher schlagen ließen.
Bei dem jungen Fischer-Dieskau waren dies u.a.Hans H o t t e r und dessen Lehrer, der berühmte Heldenbariton Rudolf B o c k e l m a n n.
Bei den Tenören bezauberten ihn die beiden führenden lyrischen Tenöre Berlins in jenen Jahren, nämlich Walther L u d w i g vom Deutschen Opernhaus und Peter A n d e r s von der Staatsoper in deren Konzerten.

Brendel is absolutely brilliant! I never heard a better piano interpretation to this song. Fischer Dieskau, of course, is unforgettable.
