Comanche was Captain Myles Keogh horse. He rode him into battle but didn't survive. Comanche was found barely able to walk. He was nursed back to health. Under orders, he was never ridden again. His caretaker was Gustave Korn and they spent alot of time together. He developed a fondness for beer that the soldiers would give him. In 1890, Korn was at Wounded Knee when he was killed possibly by friendly fire. Who knows. I read that Korn died from a gunshot wound to the head. They believe Comanche died of a broken heart when Korn didn't return home a year later. The military had him stuffed as a tribute but they never paid the bill for preserving him. No one knows why. I'm glad they preserved him.

The song is by Johnny Horton.

His paperwork says he was born June 25, 1861 and how ironic he almost lost his life nearly 15 years later on June 25, 1876.

Latest news, the swallow-tail flag will be put up for auction. It appears at 1:33 in the video. The flag was used by the cavalry. It was design to reduced wind drag as the soldiers advanced. The flag was found beneath one of Custer's men three days after the battle and may be stained with his blood.

  • Never knew this story. Very interesting. Comanche still exists in a museum in Kansas. Great story.

  • @tvcat1 Yes, it is interesting. I would hear this song when i was a kid but never knew the whole story because i thought he was Custer's horse. I certainly didn't know he was stuffed and in a museum in KS.

  • I thought Comanche died when he broke his back after being lifted to his feet, and the sling broke?

  • @AnywhereButHere09 No, that didn't happen. I'm going by the story that is told how they found him.

  • Sad song, on the bravery of the 7th. Major military blunder on Custer, thinking he outnumbered Bighorn. Though ill say Custer was outstanding, though not as good as Stuart in the Civil war.

  • @Mr19thIndiana Custer didn't have to die. The other men in charge....Reno? and the other one were cowards cause they knew he needed help but they hated him. I read somewhere, the indians said if "backup" showed up they would have turned and ran there by sparing the 7th.

  • A very interesting story. They retired him after he was well and let him roam free around the fort. He was very attached to the man who took care of him. When the man went to visit a woman friend, Comanche knew where he was and let him know it was time for bed.

  • Yes, I saw the Walt Disney movie about Commanche in the 50's with a young Sal Mineo...as the young Souix warrior who lost his pony to the Army.....but then I read the true story...and eventually went to the University of Kansas and saw ...the "brave horse"..Commanche...RR

  • @cheech37 No, I mean in old age, not on the battlefield.

  • @richjohnf I'm going by the story that i've read that they didn't take him because he was injured.
