Cleopatra's Daughter (1960) starring Ettore Manni and Debra Paget.

Cleopatra's Daughter is a minor epic that's a stand-out in many ways. First, it's a Peplum romance/adventure set in Egypt. Second, the film avoids almost every Peplum cliche, which in itself is quite amazing, and third the story is cool! It was obviously inspired by the Hollywood epic "Land of the Pharaohs" but the story for this one is much cooler.

"Land of the Pharaohs" had a bigger budget and both films cannot be compared on that aspect but for as for story-lines, where Pharaohs' script meandered here and there with no impetus, Cleopatra's Daughter's story is resolutely more successful and quite original. The idea of Shila having to fake her own death in order to save her life, only to end up being buried alive, with Resi to the rescue, is fun.

Ettore Manni (as Resi) is, as usual, excellent. He always gives believable performances even if the movie might not be. Manni, who's career abruptly ended after a tragic on-the-set accident, is an overlooked and underrated actor. And Debra Paget, straight from The Ten Commandments, is right at home in the colorful Egyptian setting. Debra made this Peplum 5 years before retiring from acting. As for supporting characters, Corrado Pani as Nemorat is memorable and I wish his character has stayed around a bit longer.

The other remarkable thing about it, oddly enough, is that it avoids most Peplum cliches. No dancing sequence, no torture scenes, no lions, etc.

Cleopatra's Daughter was filmed in Ultrascope and a lot of the action takes place off screen. A proper widescreen transfer is in order.

All in all, an enjoyable Sword & Sandal.

  • I wish they would do a movie about what happened to Cleopatra/Marc Antony's surviving children.

  • @MrMaxismybaby Her name Was Cleopatra Selene, and you are right about the set of twins, Alexander Helios, and Ptolemy Philadelphus.

  • @MORKOS621 I agree. I did some of the same reading, about Cleopatra as you did, Morkos621. And, there wasn't anything about a daughter named Shila. I think Cleopatra had three children with Mark Antony. A set of twin, boy/girl. And, another daughter, I think. But, I can't remember her name.

  • not yul brynner and anne(?) no better pharao than yul brynner.

  • not al women all men do you mean.

  • The important thing about this movie is to promote Debra Paget as one of the most beautiful actresses in the history of Hollywood. it has not attempt to be correct history

  • I checked this movie out on Wikipedia. It has nothing to do with Cleopatra's daughter, whose name was indeed Selene and not Shila, and was Antony's daughter. This movie is set in the days of Pharaoh Khufu.

  • @Emlieexx Did she even have a daughter? I know about her son by Julius Caesar. His name was Caesarion. Cleopatra had relationships with a lot of men, including her own brother. Maybe this Shila or Selene was his.

  • shila ? it's kleopatra selene not shila

  • is shila cleopatra's daughter?

    her name was actually Selene.
