  • gadzometer what do you have to say to the argument that consuming resources isnt a problem, and theyre not finite, because they are not consumed out of existence--the minerals and metals still exist but just lying inside landfills and products, etc?

I think it sounds like an asinine argument, so much so I dont really know how to respond. This one individual keeps telling me *theres no such thing as finite resources* because we can dig them up and use them again....whats your view on this?

  • @Neanderthalcouzin So essentially the argument is *the resources dont get depleted, they exist forever, we can just re-use them again and again*

My view is this is simplistic: a lot of resources cant be reused, others are scattered and misused, recycling protocols are necessary but cannot keep up with consumer practices....and we still live on a finite planet with finite resources...being able to dig up cell phones and reusing the metal doesnt ever change that........

  • @Neanderthalcouzin Just ask them for an example of a resource where we can do this.

  • @Neanderthalcouzin Resources are consumed and converted and heat is lost in the reaction. The laws of Entropy/enthalpy mean that resources will be depleted. But we can manage them much more efficiently, we can recycle and we can use alternative forms. e,g, Instead of using plastic, use glass. Use the energy from the sun to transform and recycle them. Obviously it is so much cheaper and easier to turn oil into plastic by using coal.

  • As of June 2011, We have close to 7 billion people on the planet..My problem with the original animated video, was that I thought it was too simplistic in explaining there is plenty of room for billions more people. The population is spread out unevenly around the world..Resources are being consumed at a faster and faster rate at an unsustainable rate...The majority of the resources are finite...unreplenishable...Oil for instance..With more mouths to feed, you need more arable land. More later.

  • i agree... i do not believe overpopulation is a viable issue... i belive there is enough for all...

  • I'm all for a Soylent Green day!
