The chess move en passant is not widely known by beginner and intermediate players. This video explains the en passant move. Please overlook the pronunciation error, it is pronounced, "On Passant." Thank you for watching!

  • wow. i think that this video, out of all the other ones i've watched, this one is the best.

Keep up the good work! :D

  • Thank you so much, I really appreciate your comments. It is people like yourself (and the other commenters) that encourage people like myself to create videos and share them with the world. Without such feedback, I would have never known the video was useful to other people.

  • thanx for the video .i understood you said for one move and one move only . so that means you can not repeat this move again?or can you do every time the opportunity comes along?i know it's optional . can you please clear this up for me i don't want to play chess the wrong way .thanx

  • Hey there and thanks for your comment. Basically the rules explained at the end of the video should hopefully clear up any confusion.

The en passant can be applied to any pawn throughout the game under a few conditions. You can only use it when the opposing side advances his or her pawn two squares from their beginning rank. Then, you have the opportunity to use it, but you cannot move another piece and then decide your next move is the original en passant move (has to be used immediately).

  • I think it's pronounced (awn-puhsawnt) because it's french for "in passing".

  • You are correct. I think I mentioned that in a previous comment. Sorry for the confusion.

  • i just played yahoo chess and tried to en passant.. never had a problem with using it here... but this time it wouldnt let me do it... the black pawn that move two squares was attacking a knight of mine ie after it moved two squares it was diagonally opposite my knight... if the pawn that can be taken en passent is itself threatening another piece (as above) can it not be captured en passent? i dont think so right? ( i was tired and playing badly and losing at the time...)

  • I've been playing for along time but recently statreted again my sis pulled this move on me so i looked it up turns out since she did nt do it right away she lost it

  • I know this video has been around for several years, but I just wanted to thank you for it - it is the CLEAREST example I have found!

Great job man, and thanks again for taking time to do this.

  • white goes 1st.... wrong

  • wiki made it too confusing

  • There's a possible misconception that your video propagates which is that a white pawn can only be captured by a black pawn and not vice versa. And en passant is pronounced, phonetically speaking, "on pass-on". Otherwise, very helpful - thanks.

  • This is getting me the chess merit badge. ;)

  • thanks andy a lot...i play chess on flyordie.com but many time lost the game coz of this move....now i know the rules and can use it judiciously....thanks again andy....keep the good work up buddy :)
