Informational video on how youtube functions

You tube is essentially a file hosting service. This is to say that it stores user's files and makes them publicly viewable to all. Usually its an easy task to store files, however when viewable video comes into question things become tricky. To make videos easily and readily viewable, in addition to the ability to store videos, which usually take a lot of memory and processing power to run. To solve all of theses problems Youtube creators opted with using new adobe flash player technology. The player allows the site to display videos with quality comparable to other established video players, such as windows media players and VLC, without the need to download an external player. Its estimated that over 90% of online computers already have the plug-ins necessary for Adobe flash player to run installed. By converting all uploaded video files to the H.263 variant of flash video .flv's, Youtube, effectively makes millions of videos available to the world. By lowering the quality of videos, reducing size limits and limiting videos to proportions of 240 by 360, Youtube minimizes its storage and bandwidth usage, which is already outrageously huge. However; the creators of Youtube didn't just want it to be a file hosting service, they wanted it to be a destination, a community. By creating a site that viewers would want to come back too, Youtube, effectively created one of the largest online networks and has become, the world's fastest growing website.

  • Is that your back yard? a park?

Where ever it is, it's really nice and green.

  • Well put.

I knew they hosted all these videos on their server but when do you think they'll run out of space and start charging for video usage?

Or are the ads going to go into another extreme?

These questions weren't answered, just wanted to bring them up :D. Good job on the explanation.
