i sorta understand how to get this in photography but i dont get how to make it an animation. if anyone can explain it to me i would appreciate it very much. theres just not any information on how to do this online.

Nice, but the ideal would be the camera tracking instead of the zoom.

How did you make this? I really want to recreate the stargate sequence from "2001: A Space Odyssey", but there's so little information online about how to create this effect in animation.

Check the other entries under this video. With a completely opaque folder I covered almost all of my laptop screen where I had zoomed in on a image I had constructed for this purpose. Once everything but a thin sliver of that image was covered I shot it with a DSLR like I said. You need to make sure that you will zoom past the slit entirely otherwise you end up with a weird ugly line in your frame.

I actually used a DSLR. That way you never have to worry if things don't come out, just press delete. Although for other reason, you should have a film camera. Everyone should, the world would be a better place.

How? Did you build a slit scan camera?

I just used a static camera on a tripod with a zoom lens and shot long exposures (10 seconds. ish) while zooming in. I masked off parts of the screen on my laptop and moved a bitmap image very slowly through the slit.
