Grave of the Fireflies plays in the final stages of World War II in Japan and tells of the desperate struggle of fourteen young sister, Setsuko, Seita and his four years for mere survival in the bombed-out city of Kobe.

Already at the beginning of the tragic end is anticipated: Seita dies completely emaciated and neglected in a dark corner of a Bahnhofswartehalle. His spirit then accompanied the audience in flashbacks to the individual stations of the sibling pair.

When her mother dies after a bomb attack on the port city of Kobe to take Seita and Setsuko first to her aunt. Because the boy was not involved in the reconstruction, but prefers to play with his sister, his aunt gave them less food and otherwise treated badly. The children decide to move into an old bunker outside the town and to obtain supplies from now on your own.

Although Seita begins to steal food to vegetable fields in air raids and loot houses, to sell the stolen items that are food for him and Setsuko increasingly scarce. Finally, the little girl died of malnutrition and get his brother a deserted cremation, far from any human society.

Seita, who has recently experienced accidental death of his father, finally loses the last remnant of courage.
