The highly acclaimed and influential Dutch band the Gathering is finally back releasing their 9th studio album: The West Pole. It has been 3 years since the bands last release Home and with their singer over 13 years Anneke van Giersbergen leaving the band in 2007, the band set their sails for a fresh new era. The band (celebrating their 20th anniversary this year) has during their past 8 studio albums showed that they have never been afraid of changing and evolving their musical style. The West Pole shows the Gathering is still standing amongst the pioneers of alternative rock music as they always have!

After van Giersbergen leaving, the band started working on new songs and finding new singers. With finding a new (female) vocalist in Silje Wergeland from Norway the band again completed the line up. Silje has been the singer of the Norwegian band Octavia Sperati for 8 years including several other projects. The West Pole also includes two very talented guest singers: the Dutch Anne van den Hoogen and Mexican Marcela Bovio (from Stream of Passion). The West Pole is a very vital, atmospheric and extravert rock orientated album, with all the quality and power the Gathering is so famous for, also with many new elements. The sound is guitar driven, alive and urgent; a strong and beautifully coloured album with haunting female vocals. Its produced by guitar player René Rutten and mixed & mastered by Zlaya Hadzich, who also did the production of Souvenirs. The West Pole is nothing less than a piece of masterwork!

The more I hear, the more I'm coming to think that Anneke's influence is what made this band special to me. I'm not speaking for everyone, just myself, but so far everything I've heard is nice enough, just not interesting to me.

Oh well, can't wait for the album so I can really hear it.

pretty nice but that new singer deffinately sounds very much like anneke.. and its funny becoz in the official video after anneke's departuere rene said that they wanted to change the sound and experience with new voices and that they deffinately are not looking for an "anneke clone". Still its nice works.. deffinately sounds like the gathering we all love. cant wait to get to listen to the rest of the album.

U say that there is no feeling here... what was the feeling in always? or in the gathering lp´s? if u dont like the new styles, then is something else. NOW if u say that Always was the ONLY great lp they did... clearly u have no clue about what the gathering is

Gathering is boring from the How to measure a planet album... The ONLY real TREASURE the band has produced so far is the Mandylion album. How stupid must they be not to have built up on that style and to let Anneke leave... Gathering is long dead for me. /goes to listen to Devin Townsend project

nach annekes weggang war es schwer einen geeigneten ersatz für sie zu finden.

mit silje ist das mehr als gelungen.

ihre stimme ist sehr nah an annekes ,ohne aber nur eine kopie zu sein.ihre eigen färbung macht siljes stimme mehr als prädestiniert für den job der neuen frontfrau.

auch musikalisch bringt silje so einiges neues mit in die band,was das album "the westpole"zwar vertraut,aber auch neu klingen lässt.
