www.acspowersteering.co.uk We have supplied this particular ford fiesta mk5 steering rack to motorfactors & garages for 7 yrs now a possible 3,000 plus units, and have had no problems with any the only problems we have is when they are diy or have ago yourself mechanics with no experience in this field. This s/rack is made of cast aluminium and the pinion housing is also made of cast alloy, which in turn if not profesionally fitted damage can easily be caused, by in this case cross threading. When this happens it makes the s/rack inadequate & also not able to do its job correctly because the sealed power assistance will now be pulling in air which most people understand air in hydraulic systems simply dont go.
Another issue with these certain type of ford s/racks is they are fitted with a CHECK VALVE OR PRESSURE RELEASE VALVE, THIS MUST BE FITTED IN THE TOP PORT ON THE PINION HOUSING before the ancillary feed & return pipes go back on.If this is not done then premature failure of the s/rack will incurr in a short time, and the seals inside the rack will blow out.
