Laughter and Melancholy was an exhibition held in Porto Alegre, curated by Bernardo de Souza & Mariana Xavier. Best known as opposite states of the soul, laughter and melancholy are emotion extremes that get different sorts of attention inside the contemporary art world.
Melancholy has been largely discussed through Art History, even though its strength has increased among artworks specially after 9/11. Whereas laughter, or humor, its been present in artistic movements specially since Dadaism, in the early 20th Century. However its somehow recently that we see a larger scope of artists dealing with irony and humor in the construction of their artworks.
In this century first decade, humor has been a theme in exhibitions in diverse renowned institutions such as the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo or The Hayward in London and also in texts and critical compilations about its role in the art field.
According to some critics, irony has been strongly present in the art scene among the nineties, quite influenced by the new British art traditionally ironic and by post-modernist ideas. In the years 2000, after the terrorist attacks at the Twin Towers, melancholy appears again in a wider range of artistic manifestations.
With this background, the CCVF (Cinema, Video and Photography Coordination) of Porto Alegre City Hall proposes a film, video and photo exhibition that intends to debate these two themes based on artworks that deal with humor and melancholy separately and others simultaneously.
Artists list: Yves Klein, Thomas Hoepker, William Wegman, Paul McCarthy, Yoshua Okon, Martín Sastre, Guto Lacaz, Katia Prates. Dialogues in portuguese and english.
