Last time I was in Charleston we found this crazy civil war enthusiast to give us a tour (he was independent of any of the big tour companies). So basically, I'm going off his word so it's definitely possible that we are wrong, but the guy did seem to know what he was talking about.

No. A lot of it was Steve actually, he's a really funny guy, but we kind of just made it up as we went along. That really is the house Stephen Colbert grew up in though.
