'I Dreamt of Flying' is a mixed media documentary, combining hand-drawn illustration with archive material. The piece focuses on the crews of Bomber Command who sacrificed their lives in the skies to help end World War II. My intention was to illustrate the distinct contrasts between the heroic and romanticised perceptions of the R.A.F and the brutal and terrifying realities so many young airmen faced night after night.
The film is a tribute to those men who risked their lives and to my grandfather; an RAF tail-gunner 1943-44.

  • Alex, to adopt RAF BC parlance, Bang on! Wizard show ol' boy! A superb piece of work. This could & should be utilised by museums. I am sure that the Elvington Bomber Base museum in Yorkshire would snap your arm off all the way down to the ankle for this. Thank God for men like Charles Desmond who had the courage to stand up and fight tyranny. Had it not been for people like him, we would inhabit a very different world today, a fact that all too many are ignorant of. RESPECT to the men of RAF BC.

  • Alex,

    Well done sir!!!

a fine piece on work, Thanks for taking the time to do it

  • This is a very thoughtful and heart-felt animation and a fitting tribute to your grandad. If it was your aim to get across a sense of the gulf between the myth and the reality of wartime flying I think you've done a wonderful job.

  • every well done timeless piece that gives a feeling of what it was like I hope i get a chance to see the Imperial war Museum or biggins / dover
