Actually in the original film and 2 and 3, the makeup was pretty close to the real deal. They just didnt edit out the nose and ears. I think the new freddy look should have looked like a balance of the first 3 films, balanced with the skin colors of The Dark Knight's Twoface, grey, pink and red.
