http://homeinspectioncarolina.com While at a SC home inspection, Patrick Waddell of Home Inspection Carolina finds a crawl space (addition) with the insulation reversed. The paper backing on Batt Insulation is a moisture barrier. It prevents moisture from getting trapped in the home, but yet allows it to travel out of the home. We find this often in homes where the home owner has done the work themselves. Even though it is clearly written "Paper backing is to face heat living space" they still put it in wrong. If you look in your crawl space (or attic) you should see the fiberglass side facing you. The only place you wouldn't is on an exterior wall of a garage that's not finished. In that area you would see the paper facing you.
