To all you people saying you can solve this faster - that's not the point. This scene takes place in 1981, a year after the cubes arrived in New York toy stores. Yes, he is employing the beginner's most common method to solve the cube, but the idea being conveyed is that he can solve one based off intuition, and not by merely memorizing a set of algorithms (as all of you are). This intuition is meant to be indicative of his intelligence and - perhaps - his ability to succeed on the Street.
