Something I put together from the data taken by SOHO. SOHO is the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory. They monitor the Sun's activity constantly. This is a movie on the study of the Sun's changes over the course of a Solar Cycle which is around 11 years, give or take a month and a few days. The Sun is always active, but it shows more activity during its highest points and the least activities during its lowest points. We also get to see some sunspots and solar flares and prominences.

The clips have been taken from SOHO. You can go to SOHO's website for more viewings of solar activity.

  • This is very interesting, and just shows how chaotic the universe is by nature. What is very weird is how the camera gets more staticky depending on the prominance of solar flares on the son. When there were little to no solar flares the camera was fine... when there solar flares were moderate or severe it messed the cam up bigtime. I wonder what the chances are of a solar flare wiping out entire power grids?

  • Actually such a thing has happened in the past during solar storms like that. I believe the New York power grid was affected during the 2003 storm, but I'll have to look it up to be sure.

  • The peak of solar activity is planned for 2010. It means that there will be a certain movement of the ground. Imagine powerful earthquake on all planet. Here so.

  • I'm not so sure it'll affect our earthquakes as much as it'll affect our climate. That's the main thing I'm worried about, climate changes caused by the sun's activity.

  • And another one happened too but globally in the 1800s called the Carrington.

have you heard of this? I heard from NASA that anoother solar flare was going to happen in the next one or two years. it's supposed to wipe out power grids all over the world. Like an EMP. Let me know if you know anything about it.

  • global warming is fake the sun is the problem it getting older :)

  • wow, its amazing, it actually beautiful to see. Too bad our eyes can't see that channel or frequency whatever it might be. But this was a good to make. really shows just how powerful our sun is.

  • Watch and see. Obviously you haven't studied the sun before. As the description states, the sun goes through cycles. It goes through a point of high activity and a point of low activity.

THis was a project I put together for astronomy to show what the sun does ever 11-14 years.

  • What don't you get?
