This is one of the videos that I produced for Spinearth.tv: a report about a concert of Aronas, a band from New Zealand that performed in Warsaw on November 30th 2008.
Unfortunately the website Spinearth.tv is currently (July 2011) not online and therefore my videos are not available anymore. This is why I publish them again here, at YouTube.

Aronas bring jazz (and tribe and blues) to Warsaw

Asking them to describe what kind of music they play produces the immediate answer: "Jazz!" but immediately follows the specification: "...tribe, pop, blues," and who knows what else, because the list could be even longer. Surely, Aronas is not a band that can be classified easily, not only because it doesn't fit exactly into any genre but also, who cares if its music is coherent and produces positive vibes?
On November 30, 2008 I attended the concert that these four crazy guys from New Zealand had in Warsaw in Fabrika Trzciny. It was a good surprise to see that what I appreciated about their recordings is amplified on stage with a genuine injection of energy.
The rhythmic component of this music is obviously very important, and the powerful rock-derived drumming of Jack Pollitt mixed with the exotic percussionism of Samuel Dubois and the eclectic bass lines played by Nicholas Fyffe produces an exciting rhythmic engine on which the pianist Aron Ottignon can leave his jazz footprint.
But this is not a standard jazz way of proceeding (theme/improvisations/theme again) because the procedure is closer to a pop or electronic-dance approach. There are many repetitions so that the "theme" sticks in the listeners' minds.
Watching the effect of this electro-pop-jazz on the public was impressive considering that jazzderived music is usually considered "intellectual." If everybody there was reacting physically to the music, it must mean that this is something new.
