Del looked as if she was in a trance. I had really let myself go in the interview, so I wasnt so angry anymore. I was calm and sane now. Apparently, so was she. I have to admit..i was expecting a few tears.
- Did you hear? I finally asked her, i expected she knew what i was talking about..
- Yes, she said softly.
- Arent you gonna yell or something?
- No.
She got up and started to head towards the stairs.
- Aren't you gonna say anything at all to me!?
I was starting to feel all that anger again, and it was suffocating me. She only slightly turned her head, without really looking at me, and said: - There's nothing left to say.
Then she went upstairs and locked herself in her room.
When I went back upstairs, Kevin and Nick were waiting for me in my room.
- If you're gonna scold me, youre wasting your time, I said.
- That's not why I'm here, said Kev.
I looked a bit surprised and I became curious. I sat down on the bed and waited for him to continue.
- Nick, tell Joe what happened after you forced Delia to kiss you, said Kevin, with the most serene voice.
Nick looked at me and nodded.
- I'm sorry Joe, she hugged me and I thought it was because she liked me too..i'd just told her how I feel and..
- You what!? You forced ...............How you feel? Are you serious?
Nick and Kevin nodded.
- I walked in just when Delia was yelling at him, said Kev.
I felt so low... and angry at myself.. I wanted to die right then and there! she'd done nothing wrong after all, and I was such a jerk! what I said in that interview could not be erased...why was I so stupid!?
Nick got up and walked towards me. In an instant I jumped him. I got to punch him twice in the face before Kev broke us up.
- This is no way to settle things, he said to me and Nick. You're acting like 12 year olds. Both of you hurt Delia today, neither of you deserves her! Joe, I'm so disappointed...and so are Mom and Dad... the views you promoted just now...my goodness, Joe! the whole world watches us..kids look up to us! and there you come, the "bad boy"...talking about girls as if they were accessories...talking about Delia as if she meant nothing to you at all! Did you know she wants to go public with you? Shes not afraid of the paparazzi or the press...she hates it when you try to keep it all a secret...for crying out loud...you've been keeping it a secret for over a year! Let her say what she wants...do you think she wants to live like this? Do you really think anyone could?
I looked at the floor and took it all in. Kev was right. I'd been neglecting Del all along...
- I'll go and talk to her, I said, getting up.
- It's about time, said Kev as I left the room.
I came to Del's door and rest my head on it...what was I gonna say? I deserved nothing from her....except rejection.
I had hurt her so badly..i had messed up everything.
But i had to try and say sorry...i had to try and get her back..to make it alright again...
I knocked once....twice.....three times, but no answer.
- Del! Its me! Please, I need to talk to you, I said.
Still no answer. I said it again. Nothing. I said it the third time a little louder. Nothing again. I began to knock harder...nothing. I knocked even harder and began yelling louder and louder........still no answer.
...I don't know why, but every suicidal possibility, that she could attempt in that room, came rushing through my mind like bolts of lightning...and i began to shiver at the thought of losing her forever...
I couldn't stand it any longer...i was going to explode... i didn't care about anything else anymore..all i wanted was to get into that room... and i prayed it was not too late...that she would still be alive..that i could still save her... i promised God i would always be there for her if he helped me out here...if he gave me the strength i needed...
And with my first attempt...I broke the door down.
