Marine Protected Areas have been demonstrated to benefit marine life and humans. But the size and design is critical for the protection of the ecosystem, and the inhabitants and visitors that swim into the region. Most marine protected areas are too small to benefit larger or migratory animals, but the scale of the NWHI Papahanumokuakea National Marine Monument will protect sharks and the coral reef ecosystem. This excerpt from the documentary Sharks: Stewards of the Reef features marine ecologist and National Geographic Fellow Dr. Enric Sala and the Papahanumokuakea.
