Please see the updated version of this unit at http://blacksoldierflyblog.com/bsf-bucket-composter-version-2-1/

Update for DIY black soldier fly bucket composter. I add the first food waste and also recently hatched BSF larvae to the bucket. For more details on building and operating this unit you can visit my site: http://blacksoldierflyblog.com/

  • welp today i just dump them into compost pile i ll let them do what they wanna do .

  • @mowdan77 There's nothing wrong with letting nature take care of itself. :)

  • @mowdan77 Keep observing them and experiment when you feel like it.

  • well tonight was interesting seemed like bsf didnt like thier container home or the flie maggots in there home because they were escaping i dunno how so i decided to put them in a bucket outside and they were still in thier container so at least if they get out they well go into bucket

  • @mowdan77 There are a few reasons you may get crawl-off. Overheating is the most common issue and overcrowding may also be something to look at. If the migrating larvae are coffee-colored then the crawl-off is predictable because in that stage they don't eat. They crawl away from the food and look for a dry, quiet place to pupate.

  • Your narration is so is slow and exact allowing me to take notes while I watch. I am glad you spend a lot of time explaining your points. I don't want to miss anything after having investing time and money in creating one of your composters which may increase my chances of failure. I would like to be successful at first. Thanks a million; I wouldn't change a thing regarding your videos.

  • @sulaearts Thanks! I started a forum recently and if you want some advice from me and others with experience we would love to have you join. If you go to my blog you'll see the link to the forum in the upper right column.

  • Great so interesting !

  • Freaking Gross man

  • @MrNBOAQUATICS Thanks! I appreciate the feedback about the narration but if someone is truly interested in what I have to share they will suffer through my long and monotonous commentary. The length of my videos may decrease once I've covered the basics of establishing the colony, but I'm not promising anything. ;)
