Predictions on the billions of dollars in oil and natural gas that will come out of the Eagle Ford shale project are mind boggling. The projected 70,000 new jobs it might create for as long as 30 years has San Antonio city planners expecting welcome economic prosperity towards the south. The possible economic transitioning of an historically depressed area to a thriving economy has young people considering remaining where they were raised.
All this is good news to many, but it's scary news to some. The hydraulic fracturing—fracking--that is the predominant method for getting to the reserves, is controversial in some circles, and actually against the law in Arkansas. The environmental impact of fracking hasn't been effectively measured yet, and many claim the process pollutes well water, or even might cause earthquakes. The increase in population will stress schools in the region and create housing shortages.
