This is a clip from the 1957 movie, A King in New York, starring Charlie Chaplin and his son Michael Chaplin. It reminds me (fondly) of someone I used to know.

  • Absolutely brilliant. And hysterical. I can't help but to think Charlie was expressing his own views about his own life through the McCarthy era and his deportation through his sons dialogue - in fact I'm almost certain. At any rate, priceless...

  • We've never seemed to move beyond that McCarthism attitude in many areas. Chaplin was ever making wonderful statements full of philosophical truths ... an amazing mind and talent. Watch my other video on Monsieur Verdoux - more genius! I also enjoy, but don't have it posted, his speech as Hitler in The Great Dictator ... once again, amazing man with a great message of peace and equality.

  • "Because of too much power". Simple and true.

  • the kid doesn speek like a communist but as a man with common sense

  • @3:12 "The Roman Empire collapsed with the assassination of Caesar"

That's actually entirely wrong. The empire literally began with Caesar's death. Before him, Rome was a republic.

  • just excellent!

  • Thanks for sharing this one! : )

  • @shawnadancing - I only saw Michael's lips move for one line, which, I think is pretty impressive considering all of the lines he had to memorize. He was so young yet he looked as though he felt those words passionately--it was a cute scene!

  • @lotwyo I stand corrected - what I was thinking was banishment and not allowed re entry due to what they perceived as communist leanings. I know he never became a naturalized citizen, because he declared himself a 'citizen of the world".

  • @GeminiNightOwl Chaplin was not deported. He was in London when the FBI decided to recommend the cancellation of his visa (he never naturalized as American).
