Nepean High School (NHS) host its first Mental Health Awareness Day. The objectives of this event are to:
increase student and community awareness of mental health issues
help students recognize signs of mental illness
help reduce the stigma by encouraging open discussions
increase awareness of the support services and resources available
A number of individuals and organizations from the local community as well as from across Canada will be participating to help NHS make this event a success. Students will be exposed to a variety of mental health topics through a combination of large venue and small classroom presentations. Organizations will also set up booths during lunch-time for students to learn more.
Topics covered will include: mental health disorders (e.g., depression, early psychosis, eating disorders, anxiety, addiction), stigma, wellness, suicide prevention and intervention, coping with bereavement, and more. Some participating organizations offer support services to youth in our community. Additional counselling and other support services will be available to students at NHS during the week.
