The commanding general of Marine Forces Europe and Marine Forces Command, Lt. Gen. Dennis Hejlik, paid a visit to 4th Marine Reconaissance Battalion at Camp Pendleton. Cpl. Ned Johnson reports.
After that its just like the active-duty guys and its on to the schools that make & help get you to do your job as a Recon Marine which is first and foremost...Reconnaissance!!! The jumping, swimming, and scuba is fun and cool but they are just insertion methods to get you to where the unit commanders need you to get eys on the objective. Hope the info helps (@ nazizombiesFTW1) and whether your going active or reserve ask the recruiter and they'll square you away.
The only difference between regular & reserve Marines is that you don't get to go to INDOC at SOI, you finish SOI first then go back to your reserve unit and get assigned to the R.I.P. (Recon Indoc Platoon). While in RIP you run, swim, run, and swim some more to get your PFT & Swim Qual up to Recon standards. Once you get there the unit will send you to BRC (Basic Recon Course) in Coronado. Then you'll be there from (probally now) 3 months for training.
After the rare likelyhood you pass either BRC/ARS then you get assigned to a Recon Unit. From there the unit will start sending you to schools where you learn how to insert and do your job as a Recon Marine. This is where you will go to Combat Diver, Airborne, SERE, and other schools to help you do your job.
@jcdfbdus: It is called R.I.P. not MART. After you go to Boot, if you are a 03XX MOS then you go to SOI (School of Infantry), there you learn to be a Grunt for 8-1/2 weeks. While at SOI if you are active-duty you may try out for Recon by taking the INDOC there. If you pass that after SOI they will assign you a quota to go to either BRC in Coronado, CA or to Little Creek in VA.
@CombatSupportMarine I don't get the try out part?

@armo562 No it is more of a tryout. If you fail, then you fall back on your current "job".
