The Federal Highway Administration, Washington State Department of Transportation and the City of Seattle have identified a bored tunnel as the preferred alternative for replacing the downtown Seattle section of the Alaskan Way Viaduct, part of State Route 99. The proposed bored tunnel would minimize construction disruption, maintain a vital route for people and goods through downtown and improve the waterfront environment.

This drive-through simulation shows a design concept for the proposed SR 99 bored tunnel and the connections at the tunnel's portals. More information regarding the Alaskan Way Viaduct and Seawall Replacement Program is available at http://www.alaskanwayviaduct.org.

  • The concept really does remind me of the I93 tunnel that is part of The Big Dig in Boston. It replaced an old, dilapidated eyesore of an elevated highway with a tunnel for through traffic, surface streets for local traffic, and a lot of public green space - AND opened up the waterfront eye-lines from downtown. The end result is very nice. Lots of similarities, though this should be easier as a deep-bore and not cut & cover right under the existing elevated roadway. Now it is safer & faster.

  • I'm in Seattle for work currently, but I reside in MA - and you may have heard of the Big Dig. Despite it's reputation, TBD turned out very nice - a BIG improvement. TBD tunnels don't have full shoulders either, and it isn't a big problem. They have response vehicles ready to clear breakdowns in minutes. Tunnels are expensive - you don't waste space. As for fire, etc - there are many systems to deal with that, and many much longer tunnels (under the Alps for example). Those are all minor issues.

  • Video should have occasional cars whizzing along at 60 mph like Battery Street Tunnel has now. :) 45 mph, gotta love the optimism.

  • The amount of money to run the water pumps to keep the tunnel from flooding will be astronomical. If you build something under ground , It will fill up with water. This road project is a matter of State business. The city voting on it has no consequence since it is a state road. I think it will cost the state $10,000 a month in electricity bills to keep pumping the water out of the tunnel. I hope I am wrong.

  • I guess it's time for Seattle to grow up and put their "Big City Pants" on. If it helps the commute, then it should be worth it. Then we can kick the Bicycles to the curb finally. But the city needs to learn how to appropriate the funds in a much wiser, cost-effective manner. Point blank, do it right the first time and they won't have to make excuses, point blaming fingers, and ask for more money because they didn't know how to budget.

  • Come on Seattle, don't be a bunch wimps. You let the let the billionaires con you into building stadiums while your transportation systems general suck bad. You need to get rid of the deathtrap of an eyesore and a tunnel is an extremely reasonable option.

  • @woodie3331967

That random barrier is there right now. It's not as tall, but you can't turn down Valley. If you want to exit off 99 to Dexter, you have to take Aloha (the next street after the barrier).

  • Sure do love the random barrier @ 3:13

  • No audio ?

  • @zonereyrie I agree in Boston, the "Big Dig" may have worked, but you have to realize that here in Seattle they wont pay for emergency crews to be ready, and if they do half the time they are busy looking at the accident rather then cleaning it up. This stuff does not work here cause it is a much slower pace and people like it that way, and no one wants growth.

  • where are the safety shoulders?? What if there was a major accident, and a fire, how do you expect emergency crews to get to it?? This is the most unsafe, unreliable replacement. Can you say Lawsuit. COME ON OLYMPIA!!

  • you call this a replacement. This is just a joke. And you guys vote these people in to office to approve this kind of stuff. and they pick the engineers who couldnt engineer their ways out of a corn maze. And dont you guys realize that these lawmakers just shove this stuff down your throats, and make you accept it even if you dont like it. This is a pathetic replacement. You need at least 3-4 lanes to provide safety
