I had a 1990 Crown Vic. A great car but, I didn't like the AOD transmission because it was designed for fuel economy to the detriment of smooth operation. It was designed to lockup the torque converter in every gear except 1st. The motor felt like it was struggling because it couldn't spin up a normal TC and deliver smooth power.
If I had another CV, I'd put in a regular carb'd 302 with a beefed up C4 tranny. A bulletproof combo.
