This wasn't necessarily a bad thing....when we didn't have the elevator locked between floors, we were riding it up to the fifth floor to drop poached eggs (they had them every morning in the Missouri Hall cafeteria) or poured buckets of cold Kentucky Fried Chicken gravy (KFC made this real thick milk gravy back then) onto the heads of anyone who dared enter the stairwell on the first floor.
This was a men's hall back then.....we were a bunch of pigs!
Forty two years ago we used to take thread and wrap it around the emergency stop toggle switch in the elevator...unwind a few feet and stand in the hallway....reach inside and punch the button for the next floor. Doors closed...elevator went up....string goes tight....switch goes down. elevator stops between floors. Eventually someone would notice and call the fire department.
